A Life of Leadership

Remembered as “the conscience of housing in America” by the National Association of Home Builders, Weiner was a tireless advocate for affordable housing in this country. During his prodigious career, he joined such greats as the pioneering urban planner, James Rouse, and the “father of modern suburbia,” William Levitt, by being twice-named “Fair Housing Person of the Year” by the National Housing Conference, “Fair Housing Person of the Year” by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and inducted into the Housing Hall of Fame.

Making His Mark on the Housing Industry

Leon made his mark on the industry early and was appointed to the Kaiser Commission on Urban Housing by President Johnson, which led to the cornerstone Housing Act of 1968. Later, he served on the White House Commission on Aging and the National Committee against Discrimination in Housing. He was also named a Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank, President of the National Association of Home Builders, President of the National Housing Conference, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Corporation for Housing Partnerships.

“People from every walk of life and economic circumstance share a common need, a common dream...a place to call home.”

Leon N. Weiner

His Legacy Continues

His home building and development firm, Leon N. Weiner & Associates, Inc., continues Leon’s vision of providing affordable housing for senior citizens and families of moderate means. The company built Delaware’s first integrated subdivision and has produced almost 15,000 affordable homes and apartments in more than ten states.

A Champion for Education

Created in 2004, the Foundation honors Leon N. Weiner and his beliefs that the educated nourish democratic ideals of equality, justice, and service. And in turn, this populace stimulates creativity, innovation, tolerance, compassion, and understanding for all people, all while enjoying a higher quality of life.
