About our programs

The Leon N. Weiner Education Foundation provides academic programs and services for students living in low to moderate income communities. Because social development goes hand in hand with academic progress, the Foundation also offers numerous enrichment opportunities to help students build a sense of cooperation, camaraderie, community, and larger purpose.

Featured programs:

Carrington Way and Carleton Court, Newark, DE

Through A Friend of the Family, Inc., the Foundation provides “homework club” style after-school tutoring, state testing preparation and enrichment activities twice a week right in the communities where the students live. The accessible location is comfortably familiar for the children and eliminates the additional burden of commuting and carpooling for caregivers.

A Friend of the Family’s approach to providing support includes:

  • Developing early, positive individualized interventions for educational and social development for children
  • Consult with the schools on behalf of students regarding curricula, programs and counseling services
  • Provides assistance and outreach to parents to facilitate communications with teachers

Fairfield Commons and Middletown Trace, Middletown, DE

In cooperation with the Appoquinimink School District, the Foundation began funding the services of a Family Advocate in 2011. The Advocate works with middle and high school students living in these two communities and in the schools they attend. Working with the teaching staff on behalf of the students, the Advocate consults in the development of curricula, educational materials and lesson plans.

Positive Points: summer enrichment program

This day-camp style program is geared to helping residents of low to moderate incomes experience the satisfaction of investing in their own personal development while working together to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Positive Points began in 2006 as an incentive based summer program in a single community in Warren, Ohio owned by Leon N. Weiner & Associates, Inc., and managed by its affiliate, Arbor Management, LLC. In 2007, four more Arbor sites adopted the program, and in 2011 Positive Points blossomed into a major coordinated effort spanning 19 communities in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York, and serving more than 150 residents of all ages.

Lessons and activities in the 2011 program focused on courage, character, commitment, creativity, communication and citizenship. Children and seniors gathered weekly throughout the summer to create 300 care packages bound for U.S. troops stationed overseas. To celebrate their accomplishment, the children, seniors and their families took a field trip to either West Point Academy in NY or The Delaware Air Command Museum in Dover, DE to deliver the care packages.
